Saint Ann Catholic School is accredited by the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, the North Carolina State Board of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

The goal of Saint Ann Catholic School is not only to teach children academically, but also to instill in them Christian values that will help them make the right choices in life.  We strive to encourage the children to look into their relationship with God as the touchstone for all that they do.  It is our desire that the children feel confidence in themselves so that they can be independent thinkers.  Religion is taught and modeled daily.  We attend Mass each week on Thursday.  On Friday, we gather as a community to pray and bless the children for the weekend.

We are a small school with a large sense of community. Our staff, our school families, and our parish families work together to create the best moral environment for our students.

Each class is afforded the opportunity weekly, for instruction in Spanish, Art, Computer, Music, PE and Library.  Middle School students have Spanish twice weekly.  In the Spanish program students are introduced to the basic vocabulary of the language.  They are also taught about the customs and traditions of Spanish cultures, through song, story writing and art projects.

The Open Court Reading Series is used in K through 5th grade.  Students in the Middle School study Literature through individual novels.

The school is divided into three working units, K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 Middle School.  We follow the Curriculum prepared by the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh.  It is based on North Carolina Standards and in some instances goes beyond what is indicated for the State.  We are accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Kindergarten

Our goal in kindergarten is to create a happy, healthy learning environment in which each child can grow. We assist parents in fostering in the child a positive self-image, growth in getting along with others, self control and independence.

The study of the Catholic faith takes the children on a journey of holiness that encompasses learning about and spreading the Good News, prayer, worship and care for others in love and service.  These principles are reinforced throughout the day as children interact with one another.

Our new Open Court Language Arts program teaches each of these essential concepts: the alphabetic principle; print awareness; systematic, explicit phonics; comprehension strategies and grammar, usage, and mechanics.  Our goal is to have each child reading by the end of the year.

Math offers hands-on learning so children can learn numbers in a concrete, meaningful way.

Science and  Social Studies models are integrated within the curriculum, often reflecting thoughts from the Language Arts program.  Children play an active role in learning these concepts by performing experiments; role-playing and using hands on materials.

1st & 2nd Grades

1st and 2nd grades are very important in a child’s life. With this in mind, we strive to create a positive learning environment so each child can achieve to the best of his/her ability.

Religion classes focus on an understanding of God as Father, and of Jesus as Friend and Brother. The children learn to pray and are encouraged to live as Jesus teaches.

2nd grade begins further initiation into the Catholic Church.  In First Reconciliation the children meet their loving and forgiving God, and when they receive First Eucharist they begin their lifetime journey of receiving Jesus and sharing Him with the world.

The Addison-Wesley programs focuses on hands-on learning. This helps the children understand math concepts better and meet individual needs while incorporating drill, practice and application of mathematics.

Science and Social Studies are taught in themes, including the study of mapping skills, families, cultures, relationships, animal life and community.

3rd, 4th & 5th Grades

These are often called the transitional years.  Students gain a greater responsibility for assignments.  Here at Saint Ann we try to make that transition as smooth as possible.

Religion instruction focuses on Church, Community, Creed, Sacraments and Scripture.  Students take on more responsibility in the planning and participation in weekly Liturgies and Hall Prayer.

The Open Court Reading series is used in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.  (See description in Kindergarten section).  We introduce students to a wide range of Literature, and give them many opportunities to write for a variety of purposes.

In 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Math we expand the knowledge gained in the lower grades, while introducing new concepts such as multiplication, division and fractions.

Science includes study of Physical Science (sound, heat, matter, energy), Life Science (classifying living things), Earth Science (environment and  climate, celestial bodies).

In Social Studies, students learn about the history of the United States, Canada and Mexico. In 4th Grade students study North Carolina history and geography.

Middle School

We provide a middle school curriculum based on classical studies.

Middle School, 6th, 7th and 8th Grades, are years of rapid change and growth. Our goal is to provide proper guidance during this crucial developmental state to ensure that the students are able to face the challenges they will meet when they leave Saint Ann Catholic School.

Religion classes have two purposes: to introduce and develop basic religious knowledge in Old and New Testament, Church history and morality, and to teach Christian values which will help our students make good moral decisions when confronted with tough situations.

Spiritual growth is further developed through outreach programs, Adopt-a-Grandparent Program, Advent and Lenten Projects for the poor.

Language Arts and Literature focuses on teaching reasoning skills and idea development. Writing must demonstrate both unity and coherence. Vocabulary building is also stressed and is tested weekly.  Students experience the classic literature of such authors as Mark Twain, Langston Hughes and Jack London.

The middle school mathematics curriculum develops the concept of numbers, geometry and computation.  6th Grade Math highlights the development of critical thinking and reasoning skills, while maintaining basic math skills. The core of 7th Grade Math is Pre-Algebra  or General Math. 8th Graders study Algebra I  or Pre-algebra in preparation for the end of course state Algebra test.  Students can qualify for Math Counts, a math competition for middle school students.

Science in middle school develops the concepts of life, earth and physical science. We stress reasoning, note taking and use of scientific method.  Students are involved in hands on lab activities and off-campus experiences.

Social Studies includes geography, American history and government, world regions and introduction to ancient civilizations.  The curriculum stresses the development of listening and communicating skills as well as research experience.  Community involvement and the importance of good citizenship are also emphasized in the middle school.

Extra-Curricular activities include; Chess Club, Student Council, Chorus, Band, Cantor, Choir and lector and altar server training.
